Non installation of road lights multiply road accidents

ISLAMABAD—Lack of road lights on 12-kilometer distance on the road from Koral Chowk to Rawat has multiplied road accidents.

The road lights were removed from this part of the road five years before and have not been installed so far.

CDA sources said 153 poles were installed on the part of road intervening between Koral chowk to Rawat Toll Plaza. At five places star poles were built and 40 lights were installed in 2001. During the tenure of former chairman CDA, Kamran Lashari it was decided that project of installation of new lights  be made part of Western Carriageway electricity project. PC-1 was approved amounting to Rs 32 million. Tenders were called and work order was awarded to the firm Riaz and Sons being his  bid of lowest rates.

The contractor was asked to remove old poles and install new poles. The contractor dismantled  old poles and lights but did not erect new poles and demanded for increase in the rates. CDA confiscated his security.

Later Tariq Mehmood Khan assumed the office of chairman CDA who directed that the work on this project be suspended and funds be obtained from BSDP.

Neither new lights have been installed nor tenders have been invited despite lapse of five years. Sources said that the contractor returned only 115 poles to the store and he shifted lights to his own store rather than returning them to the CDA store. Later 200 lights were returned to MPO which were used on Fazal Haq road and other places. Several lights and poles were taken away stealthily.

Now the three highways stand deprived of the facility of road lights due to negligence and slackness of CDA causing severe embarrassment among the citizens as this slackness on the part of CDA has increased road accidents manifold.

The citizens have demanded for immediate installation of road lights on the part of road between Koral chowk to  Rawat toll plaza.
